I bought a Nokia E63 last Wednesday (23-September-2009). Not a big Nokia fan myself, getting convinced by the ‘value for money’ fact and decent looks , I wanted to try that out and went for the sexy black color.

E63-Black

I faced some problems (common) and fixed it myself / from the internet. Just thought of sharing them for the sake of fellow E63ians.

I had a Sony Ericsson T610, and have been using that for 5 years. It is a rock solid phone, by all means. It survived my rough use, rains, numerous fall downs, over 1000 hours of talk time, and 20000+ texts. I did not even go to the service center once in its life time (even the battery is stock) and I am still using that as my secondary mobile. Recently the battery started fading out quickly within a day ;) .  I was bored of the ALARM tone ;) , polyphonic ringtones, service provider’s no-support for GPRS, no third party application support, 4MB memory, VGA camera, etc. Decided it was time for a change, and went for E63 after considering IPhone, HTC G1, HTC Touch Diamond on the higher end, Blackberry Curve 8520, Nokia E71, E63 on the lower end. Finally settled down with E63.

Glitches faced during mobile switch:

Phonebook copy

To put simple, all options of transferring my 500 odd contacts to new phone failed.

Bluetooth to bluetooth phone transfer failed for some weird reason, T610 to my laptop bluetooth transfer was failing for some reason, wire transfer to my laptop could not be done because I had already thrown the T610 USB connectors and CDs away. I then tried synchronizing my contacts with outlook and Voila!! It worked. My laptop’s Outlook now had the contacts in it. I found I could transfer them in two ways – simply synchronize using PC suite or use the software vCard export V3.0 to export all the contacts as separate vcfs and transfer to the E63. All’s well now.

GPRS activated and working. but WIFI?

Pissed off with the Wi-Fi thingy. E63 wouldn’t work in my home WAN. I was not able to download anything from GPRS as my current data plan was expensive for bulk downloads.

E63 would detect the wi-fi network, accept my wi-fi password, add it to the access point, but always threw WEB: GATEWAY NO REPLY when I tried to browse. Took quite a bit of time to figure it out. But, worth jotting it down somewhere for someone to refer. Here is what I did and which finally worked (after seeing so many forums and so many solutions)

And ya, I am using a Huawei WA1003A router.

- Set up a home page in the access point – ya I did, but it did not work. Same ‘Package No Reply’ error.

- Give manual IP4 settings, restart the phone – did not work. Same ‘Package No Reply’ error.

- Change the WPA key if at all you use for your wireless security to 10 digit HEX WEP string – tried it, did not work. Same ‘Package No Reply’ error.

- Removed the wireless security, let my connection open, tried connecting now. Same ‘Package No Reply’ error.

- Give the MAC address of the phone and unfilter it in the router home page – did not try, thought it was just stupid since my router was set such that did not filter any devices.

- Update the phone’s firmware to the latest one – did not try since I wanted to do keep this if there is no other go. By the way, my phone’s firmware is 100.21.110 which is good enough for wi-fi.

- Update the router’s firmware -did not try since I wanted to do this after updating phone’s firmware – lastest option.

- tried with hotspot wifi connections. sadly it threw ‘WLAN could not be connected’ or ‘web: gateway no reply’ all the time.

- After all this, I remembered that I give the broadband connection user id and password from my laptop and is not STORED in the router. DAMN!!!! so stupid that was. I quickly went through the router homepage, tweaked it, gave the user id and password, saved, enabled DHCP (for some reason from some forum), restarted the router and Wi-fi now works like a charm in my E63. Complete configuration details of Huawei WA1003A router can be found HERE.

- Understood that ‘Web: No Gateway Found’ is a generic error message that comes out for various reasons.

- Don’t recommend giving the phone to Nokia Care before you try your hands down with your router / connection thing because the Nokia Care folks just flush the phone and install the latest firmware. Nothing else as I enquired them.

- Better to talk to the Nokia promoters in the Nokia priority sales showroom (not Nokia care service center), they can actually help by connecting to the showroom wi-fi. I found out that the problem is not with the phone, but with the connection only after browsing for sometime from within a Nokia priority sales showroom.

Writing this alongside enjoying some music videos in youtube through my wlan connected E63 ;)

Have fun, hope this helps!!!

Award!

Awarded by bloomsUnlimited, I am deeply honoured with this! ;)

Every nice thing in this world comes with a price tag, don’t they? So, this award comes home with a set of rules:

* Put the image on your blog
* List 10 truths about yourself
* Give the award to 5 other people
* Provide meaningful quotation

I have already put the image top up in the post. Errrrr 10 truths about me to put in the internet is GROSS! RUCK FULES! I hate ‘em, afterall rules are meant to be broken.

Maybe I can try writing some truths about me, but just can’t think of passing the same to 5 another guys – I have quite a few in the blogroll and I have been trying to maintain this site as a semi-informative and most of the hits come for them and not to read my personal yada-yada.

1. The first thought that struck me on seeing this pass by award and intimidating someone to write 10 truths is “It is guckin fay!” lmao – NOT to offend the award originator or the midway passers or the daisyblue(oom) who generously passed on the award to my blog (Thanks Dais :) )

But I seriously believe that these sorta things are humongously girlish. After all who will read all nice things about guys nicely written and posted? lol, guckin fay!

I decided to continue writing – I ain’t a gay, but just to maintain the f*kin dignity of the award!

(This is a truth to be counted in ;) )

2. I drive bikes at real crazy speeds (kinda my possessed obsession). I know it is bad, but always I’ll be sure that I don’t harm the public. I am trying to dampen it after I saw a freak that overtook me at about 115 – 120kmph in a bessie beach sunday eve drag race crashed with a pedestrian and got the ped’s skull opened. It seriously SUCKS.

3. I cuss a lot and it’s already evident from this post lol

4. I hate my current profession.

5. I was seriously pissed off, distressed for the past few months for various reasons n just getting out of it.

6. Sixth truth is that I don’t really get anything from my grey cells that I could harmlessly put in the internet – They are awfully asking for a good sleep which I haven’t had for the past one week. So, cutting the crap with this.

Rules are meant to be broken as I already said :D So, am stopping my rambling with this, and I aint passing this to any fellow bloggers (Rather I follow a very few non-technical bloggers) – If in case you have a blog, you read this and you don’t have this award already, freely treat it as an award that I pass on to you, my READER ;) – Go on, have fun.

Oh, missed it – the “Meaningful” quotation:

“Dreams are like greams road, fruitshops and gallopin gooseberries might be there, but reality is like “Andhra mess” where all the crowd is in” – makes meaning, no?

chao.

I (not only I did, but most job seeking freshers I knew did) used to practice over 1000 puzzles from Shakunthala Devi Puzzles to Puzzle you, More Puzzles, The Great Book of Puzzles and Teasers by George Summers, Logical Deduction puzzles by George Summers, Quantitative Aptitude by R.S.Aggarwal, Old question papers for the written test (heard that the pattern has now changed) in hardly one or two month’s time. So, there definitely IS some hardwork behind all the so-called-easy-success. And, I can say that there is nothing in this world that will come fall into your hands so easily as you have thought off and written.

Past times, same kind of useless desperate remarks were being made on the Bank jobs and other white collar jobs and now IT taking its turn. Who knows, same kinda comments could be made on GOOD writers tomorrow.

Every Culture has its own merits and de-merits. Neither Dravidian culture is the perfect one nor Western culture is the worst one. Sicko writer needs foreign money but not their good practices.

Exaggerated truth. But still I second this.

I accept. But this is exaggerated as well.

This has been ruthlessly pointed to IT bachelors. I personally feel that this advice suits for almost all unmarried people.

Again a misleading statement. Not only IT people work abroad. It is so dumb like saying that every Afgan is a terrorist!

No Comments. I have seen this only in movies, haven’t even heard of people doing such things. Writer might have seen Vadivelu-Parthiban-Dubai comedy before writing this, maybe, ya :)

A clever Disclaimer! If you don’t own what you say / write, then you shouldn’t have written it.

PS: Due to some technical problems with my browser, I couldn’t write the whole post in Tamil :(

Interview experiences-part 2 July 3, 2007

Posted by karthicksundararajan in chennai, crack interviews, interview, java, java interview, technical, technical interview.

This post is the continuation of my previous post about interviews. People started asking that did I attend 37 intws now, really? Yes, I did. But I did not go to 37 different companies. some were repeats ;) . Here comes the list…

  • - wipro technologies ( off campus at pollachi mahalingam college – failed in technical written test)
    - icici infotech ( now 3i infotech) – failed in the written test
    - zylog (campus placement ;) and got thro… but they asked for original certificates – so dint take that up)
    - IGI global ( campus placement – dint get through the interview)
    - ICICI (after all rounds, I understood that it was a telecalling job., jeez, I ran away dropping my resume folder there)
    - convergys(in second round I told that I’m not interested in relocating to bangalore – intw happened at ‘The Aruna Chennai’, nungambakkam)
    - quintegra(cleared the written test and still awaiting for the interview call :D heheh lol)
    - sutherland (in ‘Next’, Nandanam – failed in the second round – they asked to speak about a topic continuously for two mins ;( )
    - sutherland (in hotel president, radhakrishnan road, mylapore – for HP support – rejected since I dint knew the devices that can be connected to an USB port)
    - sutherland (in DBS business center, nungambakkam – for windows XP support – rejected since I dint knew how to partition a hard-disk and about the logical partitions of HDD)
    - sutherland (in DBS business center, nungambakkam – for windows XP support – selected :) but for non-technical voice based support. So, I dint take this offer up)
    - NICCS (in kilpauk – pulla pudikkara idam… came out screaming :D this was actually a call center training institute. after several rounds, they said that we need to take up a training paying 5000 Rs and after completion, NICCS will assist in placements)
    - cosmosoft, kodambakkam(rejected since I did not knew Java)
    - a company in anna nagar (dont remember the name… it was opposite to a park in the first floor – they said they will get back later… they called up sometime later and I decided not to take up since it was a very small company – looked like mannar & co for me…)
    - hexaware – (cleared the written test with josh, failed in the GD due to two braggarts… only one girl was selected in our batch)
    - isoft in loyola – cleared the written test – but they said they will get back later and they never came back to me
    - isoft in loyola – again went for the written test. same set of questions :) cleared the written test, GD and interview too… they got back to me after I joined polaris – so I did not take up the offer
    - polaris – Got the offer, accepted it and worked there for almost two years.
    - CTS – cleared written test with ease, but badly screwed up in the interview… interviewers damaged my self-confidence. this made me to think that I should never step in to an intw without preparation.
    - infosys – cleared the written test at meenakshi college, kodambakkam, and cleared the interviews at sholinganallur Infy. One of my best performances so far. The panel was really impressed and gave me lotsa options. I took up the offer… but did not join Infy.
    - oracle(at le royal) – failed in the technical interview (third round)
    - oracle(at le royal) – failed in the technical interview (third round)
    - oracle(at taj connimara) – failed in the managerial/HR interview fourth round)
    - fidelity(at taj coramandel) – opening was for PL/SQL developer. I somehow managed to clear the written test. but the interviewers told that they will get back to me for a suitable java opening… and they never came back as usual.
    - oracle(telephonic) – three rounds – did well…but dint get call after that.
    - oracle retech(telephonic) – cleared one tech round… but I was not interested in taking that forward since I was a bit suspicious about the company’s association with Oracle corp.
    - perot systems(telephonic) – cleared one tech round. but the profile was for pro*c, oracle professionals.
    - credit suizze(c++) – went to bangalore for attending this. After going there, came to know that they were not ready to interview a java guy. So I went to c++ panel and failed.
    - efunds – got the offer. but did not join the company.
    - EDS – cleared all rounds. I did not take up the offer since I was not comfortable with the pay they offered.
    - HCL – cleared all rounds. I did not take up the offer since I was not comfortable with the pay they offered.
    - ml – got screwed up in third round because of my showiness in resume abt my oracle certification.
    - rsq – got the offer. but did not join the company.
    - navis – got the offer. but did not join the company.
    - tvsinfotech – they found out another guy before they finish the interview process with me. so dropped in the middle.
    - capgemini – cleared first round. they never called me up for the managerial round.
    - HP – cleared the interview, took up the offer.

My success rate in interviews is 16 outta 37 ( I’ve included the numbers which I’ve cleared and they never called me for subsequent rounds ;) ). After I gained some experience, the success rate has increased tremendously. As I said earlier, I believe that technical competence can make one to get through any interview. If not technically sound, good attitude + preparation will do good in most cases. Comments / ideas / advises are most welcome.
