India Shining… June 28, 2007

Last week, one morning, when I was on the way to my office, I got stuck in traffic as there was a heavy blockage near guindy kathipara junction since the construction of the fly-over is going on. It has become a routine now-a-days
and here is how our people behaved on the occasion when an ambulance with a patient got stuck on the traffic. The ambulance driver was seeking a pavement and he was announcing in his mic asking the vehicles to move. Shockingly, most of the people didn’t even try to move / slow down to their left hand side after seeing Ambulance behind them. Some people were trying to use the way that was left for the Ambulance. Not only the notorious auto drivers, but also well educated_white-collar_job_people_in big_cars did the same. I have better known that we Indians are kind, friendly in nature than most other races. But then, from where this relentlessness has come?
I really wonder what do our people get in
- - breaching the stop line in signals
- - starting before the signal says to ‘GO’
- - not stopping after RED ( we Indians never stop for ‘ORANGE’ )
- - Crossing the signals inappropriately (gosh, they don’t understand that they are not risking their lives alone. I’ve seen an accident involving a school kid and his mom who got hit by a signal breach. God knows what happened to that kid and his mom. Will that hitter accept this if the same happens to his wife and kid? He simply ran away hitting ‘em)
- - spitting on trains, buses, on roads, on roads sitting in bus (who cares who is on the road), inside buildings, anywhere and everywhere. (Will you ever spit inside your own house, on the living room, behind the tv, or inside the refridgerator? jackasses!@#!@. This habit is found on all levels… not only the uneducated, rural people but also well groomed, educated ppl does this, but in a slightly different way. I’ve seen people in my company (so-called fortune 14 company
) sticking up chewing gums in the loo, on the staircases, etc., I’ve even seen people who leave the wash room without washing their hands after peeing. god damn, aren’t we taught about personal cleanliness?? or is this the common Indian attitude – they know how to do and they should do, but they dont do for whatsoever reason) - - and the list goes on…
I know a friend who just came back from a short US trip. After he came back, he was praising US about traffic system, discipline on roads, maturity and their cleanliness. He was cursing about Chennai roads, traffic system and disobedience. He never understood that the obedience there in US was something which was not imposed on people but they follow it up themselves. Imagine what if every Indian follows rules, regulations, compliant to government policies… does it sound like Director Shankar’s one-liner
lol.
If we speak to a srilankan refugee in India once, we can feel how comfortable we live in our mother country, what she has given to us and what we are doing to her in turn. I have met one such person five years ago when I realized that I’m in heaven without knowing that it is heaven. We can’t say all this happens because of the large population. We may boast that we are one of the oldest civilisations in the world and we are culturally more stabilized. But until we change our attitude and develop love towards our country, we will only be talking, praising, and comparing about/with the 231-year old kiddo.
This is a great slideshow which I thought I’d share with all
(not sure how many will read my blog heheh lol)
